Cocktail party: success!

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

The refined evening last night with other young urban intellectual professionals was a success. Everybody was a good sport and dressed up (although one guy did wear a revealing, slinky cocktail dress to mock the idea) and we all made polite conversation as we listened to the smoothest jazz in the valley.

I cut my thumb at the end of the night when slicing cheese but it wasn’t very deep and didn’t bleed for too long. I thought to myself, “Hm, maybe I shouldn’t be cutting cheese with the knife pointed towards myself like this, especially after a couple drinks… It should be ok because I’ll be careful and– agh, my thumb!” Good thing my knives are all dull.

I’ll probably post pictures tomorrow.

Sometimes, when you have a dog…

Friday, January 11th, 2008

You walk through the living room and glance outside and see your dog standing on the balcony, looking hopefully through the glass sliding door.

You remember that about 20 minutes ago you switched the laundry and called the dog as you walked inside, thinking she was out there too. You looked around and didn’t see her so figured she was in her basket as usual, then promptly forgot to check.

Luckily, your cold winter night is 51 degrees.

Gourmet Cooking: Lesson 5, Tomato Soup

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
11 oz can condensed tomato soup
Soup can of water, or milk for creamy soup
1-3 cloves garlic, minced
Small bit of dried basil
Small bit of dried oregano
Pepper to taste

1. Mix all ingredients in saucepan or bowl big enough to hold it all with some room leftover. Simmer on low for 10 minutes to combine flavors. (Or microwave until it starts to boil.)

2. Delicious served with grated cheese and cornbread.

I make this with water instead of milk. If you want to get fancy, sautee the garlic first for a minute or two before adding the rest of the ingredients. If you’re using chopped fresh herbs, add them first with the garlic.

Dresses!

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

I went shopping today and bought two dresses. The last time I bought a dress was… let’s see here… the summer of 2003? I think spending $40 every four and a half years is acceptable. These are fun party dresses that could also work if I am invited to a book premiere or gallery opening party, for example. I didn’t try sitting down in either of them so their usefulness is questionable for any kind of event that is not filled with standing around looking fabulous.

I am having a cocktail party in a couple weeks to celebrate a successful beginning to the New Year and I will wear a new dress as I “join other young urban intellectual professionals for a night of sophisticated pretension”, according to the invitation. Dress: cocktail attire.
